I feel like my “update your blog posts frequently” talisman of wisdom falls on deaf ears at times.
Everyone seems to rush forward to publish new content.
But what about your old content?
Do old posts on your blog serve readers?
Or do these irrelevant posts weigh down your blog?
Like it or not, blogs are full bodies of work.
Never frame your blog as a collection of standalone posts or else you will forget to trim the blogging shrubs from time to time.
Never forget old content or readers – and Google – may just forget your blog sooner than later.
Why Did I Publish this Post?
I reviewed this post a few moments ago:
7 Successful Bloggers to Follow
I noticed a few different things:
- some bloggers from my list no longer actively blogged
- some cover niches not aligned with my blog, brand and online business
- some moved on from blogging all together
I initially published the post in 2014. At that time, one blog from the list was the leader in a specific niche. But after checking the blog a few moments ago I noticed the last published post was from June of 2024.
Successful bloggers blog consistently. If I build a list of successful bloggers to follow I need to remove any blog last pointing to new content in June of 2024. I love the blogger but the individual does not *really* blog these days. Blogs are news portals; June of 2024 is fairly old news, as the world would judge it.
Other bloggers from the list formerly covered niches highly aligned with Blogging From Paradise Dot Com as of 2014 and even up to 2025. But life changes. Those same bloggers now cover various niches not at all related to my blogging tips niche.
What Decision Did I Make?
What did I decide to do?
I whittled the initial list of 14 bloggers to 7 bloggers.
Now you have 7 highly successful, current, active, trusted bloggers to follow as a blueprint for your blogging strategy.
Life is change.
Life changes quickly sometimes.
This is why updating blog posts every 3-6 months makes sense.
At the very least, updating posts every 6-12 months is a non-negotiable because trusted and aligned blog links and blog content can and do change in a universe of flux.
What seemed relevant recently can become irrelevant quickly.
Truly helpful content from 6 months ago may not benefit your reader at all today.
Build your blog into an industry-leading resource.
Update content regularly.
Update Posts Frequently
Before we dive into specific examples as teaching devices, I love all bloggers out there. I respect everyone with the balls to do this gig for a minute, let alone decades.
Bloggers from the initial list of 14 all earned my respect forever.
But I invested 12 years of my life building Blogging From Paradise into one of the leading blogging tips resources out there. Even if I love these bloggers I no longer point out backlinks based on favors, guilt or personal admiration.
What I am saying is this: your blog needs to be current and aligned with my message to keep your backlink.
As a practical example, a blogger covering an online business niche in 2014 now focuses on celebrities. I removed the link because my blog has nothing to do with celebs. Nothing personal; just business. I love the guy but the content on this blog needs to be accurate for me and you.
Another blogger used to cover making money online but dissects coding, these days. My blog has nothing to do with coding.
Another blogger covered blogging tips liberally in the past but delves into a heavily multi-topic blog. My blog has nothing to do with multiple topics. I cover blogging tips with a smathering of travel-themed posts but only because you my readers pleaded with me to cover my travels, here and there.
Guys….this is why I highly recommend updating posts every 3-6 months. Your blog is your online reputation. Your online reputation determines your:
- organic traffic
- Google traffic
- social media traffic
- backlinks
- blogging income
Linking to off topic blogs negatively influences the factors from the above bullet point list.
Linking to less trusted blogs (compared to prior incarnations in 2014 when I initially published the post) negatively influences the factors from the above bullet point list.
Times change. People change. Bloggers change. Human beings change motivators. Human beings change niches based on personal preferences. Human beings change publishing schedules based on motivators.
Keep Your Investment in Mind
I am equal to everyone reading these words and all bloggers on planet earth.
But on a level of form, I gave 12 years of my life to covering the blogging tips niche inside-out, upside-down, backwards and forwards. I only link to bloggers from aligned niches who made a similar commitment. That list of bloggers has dwindled greatly over the past 12 years because people make different choices as time passes. It is just natural.
As the list lessened, I reduced the number of successful bloggers I can vouch for. Some of the bloggers remain successful yet blog about different niches than mine, these days, at least. Other bloggers were incredibly successful in the past but pumped the brakes by severely lessening their publishing schedule.
I need to ensure that all:
- words
- concepts
- links
- suggestions
- recommendations
continue to build my credibility in the blogging tips niche.
This is why I cut the list in half.
This is also why updating blog posts frequently makes sense.
Conclusion
No need to snare anymore of your time my fellow bloggers.
Update your blog every 3-6 months because everything can change dramatically within that time frame, including backlinks you pointed to in the past.
Let go what no longer serves you and your readers.
Replace what needs replacing.
Or just streamline your content to offer a specialized experience for readers.
Build topical authority.
Earn granite-like credibility.
