Successful blogs flash patterns.
Knowing how to start a blog the right way isn’t as hard as you think.
Top bloggers do a few things well to earn credibility.
I struggled as a beginner blogger. I mindlessly charged forward without a clear strategy in mind.
Learning how to build a blog from pros put me on the right track.
Keep these blog characteristics in mind to begin your venture successfully.
1: Frequent Updates
Successful blogs keep readers current.
Publish one blog post weekly. Offer readers timely guidance to maintain credibility.
Blogging is somewhat similar to news reporting. Updating blogs daily is unnecessary unless you cover a fast-moving niche. Publishing one blog post a week gives readers what they need to know to stay informed.
Tips for Publishing Blog Posts
- publish long form content spanning 1000-1200 words
- share practical tips to solve common problems within the niche
- format content with headers, paragraphs and bullet point lists for easy reading
- add one appealing image to each post
- choose simple titles delivering a clear promise
Never select quality over quantity.
Choose both but for the long term.
Be prolific for years.
Publish a heavy volume of high quality content.
2: Conversational Style
Chat with readers.
Adopt a conversational tone.
Put your community at ease.
I imagine myself enjoying a fireside chat with readers while I write blog posts.
Being informal disarms readers. Followers tend to approach genuine bloggers.
Write how you speak.
Relax your mind. Blog to connect not to impress anyone. Readers want helpful content delivered in a conversational package.
Lose the corporate speak. This is not English class; no teacher to appease.
Picture yourself helping friends with how-to guides. Behave how you would in a relaxed offline setting.
Bond with your tribe by running an informal blog.
3: Two-Way Chats
Successful bloggers encourage two-way engagement.
Professional bloggers build loyal communities through the art of listening.
Blog comments build a strong tribe at Blogging From Paradise Dot Com. Most commentors return via my offsite comments or because loyal readers bookmark my blog. People dig my blog because everyone with something authentic to add can be heard.
Never treat your blog like a niche dictatorship. What you say does “not” go. Blogging from a pulpit turns off most readers.
Blogging is not a one-way street.
Thriving bloggers grow tight knit communities based on offering helpful content and filtering reader feedback.
My most successful blog post ideas originate from reader feedback.
Give your readers what they want by listening closely to their comments.
Keep channels of communication open.
Practical Tips to Encourage Engagement
- open blog comments; read and reply to genuine comments
- embed a contact form or link to your email address
- reply to your inbox on social media
- reply to comments on social media
Build strong relationships with your tribe.
Grow a tight-knit blogging community.
Be open to reader feedback.
Publish content based on specific reader problems.
Make your blog a friendly two-way street.
4: One Clear Niche
The world trusts specialists.
The world looks past generalists.
Cover one niche. Publish content to solve specific niche problems.
Build strong topical authority.
Do one thing to do it well.
Specialists succeed in all walks of life.
Think of leaders in any niche. Go-to guys and gals master their subject matter over years.
Deviating confuses readers. How can you help one specific person by attempting to serve many? Readers pick up on your lack of clarity. Most abandon ship to skyrocket your bounce rate.
Stick to a clear niche. Never stray.
Earn trust.
Possible Niches
- blogging tips
- travel
- sports
- sneakers
- food
- politics
- remote work
YMYL blogs fall within the finance and health categories.
Gaining credibility in these niches is difficult because achieving expert status requires strong proof.
Back up claims with trusted external links. Build trust. Avoid legal entanglements.
5: Transparency
Be hones with your readers.
Maintain transparency to be trustworthy.
Sell only what you personally achieved. Sell what you vouch for as an affiliate.
Publish a disclosure page.
Be upfront with your readers.
Develop a pristine blogging reputation.
Blog ethically.
Don’t give into the temptation to make a quick buck. Dishonest bloggers roll in and out as quickly as the tide.
Set realistic blogging goals for yourself to be realistic with your readers.
Dissolve any shred of delusion in your mind. Successful bloggers publish detailed content for years before going pro. Drill these numbers into your mind to be honest with readers.
Share wins and losses. Blog like a real human being. Divulge your insecurities. Dissect your doubts.
Let readers know the rest of the blogging story; not just the blogging highlights.
Be vulnerable to gain reader trust.
Be transparent by sharing it all.
I built my blogging rep on sharing screw ups.
I devote most space here to share successful tips.
Yet how can I be credible if I hide my blogging screw ups? Humans mess up.
Blog like a normal human. Share it all. Be real. Be credible.
Conclusion
Success leaves clues.
Keep these characteristics in mind as you build your blog.
Ryan Biddulph is the owner and creator of Blogging From Paradise Dot Com.
Hi Ryan,
Sadly, I had to disclose a few weeks ago that I’d made a big mistake recommending a particular blogging program that I thought would be good for beginners – because someone I trusted told me it would be. Hah 🙁
Then when I got inside it, it was incomprehensible to me – as a fairly experienced blogger. So I couldn’t possibly recommend it to anyone else.
Some you win, some you lose.
You got that right, Joy.
We have all been there.
Being transparent is paramount. Admitting errors is important. Keeps our credibility intact.
