I challenge you to publish more content.
Whoops.
Was I not supposed to say that?
The blogging masses tell you this is a mistake.
But I challenge you to do it.
Here is where your head may explode; create evergreen content highly detailed in nature so you never need to update the posts.
Strike that.
Publish highly detailed, largely evergreen content at a greater clip. Update old content but only to strip out dead links and irrelevant references.
Follow my strategy consistently. Minimize time spent on updating old content.
Blogging convention moves in a different direction. Bloggers pump the brakes on publishing but ramp up updating and distribution. I do not oppose this tactic. I do challenge myself though to amplify my blogging reach.
Increasing blog post frequency and depth – aiming for evergreen content – is one of my favorite challenges because “this or that” thinking becomes irrelevant in this scenario. Quality or quantity. Choose one or the other. How about both? Toss in evergreen content to drastically reduce the need to update content thoroughly every 6-12 months.
I Resisted Following this Blogging Guidance
Being a human being with unconscious fears I did not follow this advice for stretches. I consistently update old posts. But at least going forward my new content is good to go for a while. My new content is timely and highly detailed. I will check it out in 6 to 12 months to prune dated references and replace with timely references.
Why did I not step up to the challenge?
Fear.
I feared overwhelming readers with helpful content. I feared challenging the blogging status quo. I ran away from the fears into stagnant cyber waters.
Lesson learned.
Bloggers Find this Strategy Difficult to Follow
I need to be transparent.
Publishing a heavy volume of highly detailed content consistently is difficult.
How do you get through difficult situations?
Leave your comfort zone to get the job done.
I wrote one post last night, updated another post and wrote this post. I am not special. Anybody can do it. I remember one high level blogger writing three long-form posts daily for years. He did it. I can do it too if I so choose. You can do it too if you so choose.
Incredible difficulties manifest the moment you consider devoting more time to writing posts. What does that mean? Taking away other blogging activities. Hence the intense discomfort masked as severe difficulties.
Wise bloggers offer a helpful talisman of blogging wisdom: update old content thoroughly before writing a new post. Make old content work for you as refreshed content. I agree.
But in a world of duality I sometimes disagree. I disagree with my teaching. I disagree with my strategies. Anyone who doesn’t disagree with themselves temporarily is either enlightened or foolish.
Prioritize Publishing Detailed New Content
Prioritize publishing highly detailed, evergreen, new content consistently. Update and promote old blog posts as a secondary activity. Engage in genuine blogger outreach and aggressive distribution as tertiary activities. Never screw up this order. Prioritize publishing a high volume of increasingly detailed content even though this feels challenging sometimes.
Feel the fear and do it anyway.
I know it’s not easy.
I know how challenging popular blogging advice puts you on the spot. What if popular blogging advice isn’t the right advice for you now?
What if less popular blogging advice maximizes your blogging traffic right now?
Food for thought, hey?
Take the Challenge
I challenge you because I challenge myself. If I’m up to the challenge you are up to the challenge by default because each of us possesses an unlimited mind.
Sometimes we think small.
Sometimes we think big.
Today’s post is all about thinking big.
Fear in the mind warns you against publishing a consistent quantity of high quality, evergreen content. “You will eventually wind up losing somehow”, the voice of fear in your mind says.
How so?
Publishing in-depth, detailed content now is doing it right the first time. Minus some updating some content a number of months down the road, these types of posts are the gifts that keep on giving. Yet most bloggers fear challenging popular advice. Following popular advice feels easier to do. So they do it.
I don’t blame them. I’ve fallen into similar blogging circles during my blogging doldrums.
Pick yourself up out of the blogging canyons.
Raise yourself up to the blogging mountain tops.
Evergreen Content Is a Long Term Asset
Publish an increasing volume of content. Add as many details to that content as possible. Make it as evergreen as you can. Publish the gift that keeps on giving. Evergreen content becomes a long term asset.
Going forward, you will notice something pretty sweet. New content becomes an asset that barely needs your attention minus some social sharing. Do the job right the first time to complete the job. Again; in an imperfect world you may need to update content a little bit. The amount of time you save by following this strategy becomes stunning.
Human beings are busy bodies hell bent on distracting themselves with more work. Wise entrepreneurs do a dazzling job by focusing on some freeing purpose. Business wizards do not distract themselves with busy work. Business leaders get the job done right the first time. Business assets work for them. This is how you enjoy your life of freedom from time and location.
I’m:
- increasing my publishing schedule
- expanding my distribution strategy
If I don’t walk my blogging talk why would you trust me?
Look below. Do you see those page view numbers? That’s me walking my blogging talk. Following my page views in real time give you an idea; this stuff works.
Imagine if you see five, ten or 150 views for this blog post. Multiply 5, 10 or 150 views by 650 Blogging From Paradise posts. Remember that these numbers are cumulative. Everything adds up cumulatively on the blogging side of things. Entrepreneurs think cumulatively; everyone else separates the numbers, beats themselves up and winds up quitting.
How can you increase these numbers exponentially over the years?
Publish a heavy volume of highly detailed, evergreen content.
Publish more content with more details and add a timeless element to every blog post.
Do the job right the first time.
Save time updating old content by hitting the mark on the first try.
It’s not easy but it is an investment in freedom from time and location.
I think you’re up to that.
