I broke up a dogfight last week here in Chiang Mai, Thailand by punching and pounding and sticking my hands into a mix of savagery, big teeth and full-on testosterone-infused doggies. One doggy bit me. Because I did not know of this clever secret.

1: Clarity Is the Solution


If you cannot seem to make money blogging, clarity is the solution. Lack of clarity is the problem. But getting clear solves your money problems.


Confused bloggers wrongly – through their lack of clarity – believe something outside of themselves will bring money to them. An affiliate stream. A specific product they create and sell. An eBook they write and sell.


Not true.


The secret: all success is an inside job. Sure you act/work and follow practical tips but how you work determines the success you see. Or lack thereof.


Look at a guy like John Chow. He earns hundreds of thousands of dollars monthly through his blog because he is hyper clear on what he does, how it benefits you and goodness he lacks no clarity about his offering. He is bold. He is clear. So the actions he takes yields him millions of dollars.


Some bloggers take similar actions but seem stuck. They simply lack clarity. The work ain’t the issue. The clarity is.


Solution: get hyper clear on your intent. Why are you blogging? Focus on 1 core reason. Proceed wit that intent in mind.

Cut through the confusion. Help folks drive traffic and profits. Many will do the same for you, expanding your reach quickly.


3: The Money Is NOT in the List


The Secret: the money is NOT in the list. The money is in both the friendships you build through your list and the convenience of receiving blog posts via email.


The confusion: believing inanimate numbers on a screen (# of list subscribers) nets you money. Frustration and anger and annoyance sets in when numbers on a screen do not pad your bank account. Numbers cannot buy, or feel, or respond. People can.


Build bonds with the human beings who subscribe to your list. Help them. Ask what they are struggling with. Provide answer-solutions through your blog post. One of the most frustrating things about being a confused blogger is that you seem destined to fail – and do fail – until you realize all the results you see are mirrors of your energy.


Follow your fun. Work diligently. Dive into your fears. BE the person to become the person. Do most of what you do not to avoid fear, but to have loads of fun, to spread love and to dive full bore into your fears.


5: Your Dreams Sit Surrounded by Your Fears


Every dream you cling to:


  • circling the globe as a pro blogger
  • retiring from your 9-5 job through blogging
  • becoming an author
  • making more money through your blog than your current job
  • opening a steady passive income stream through your blog
  • insert 40 billion possible dreams here


sits within a lair surrounded by your deepest fears.


Example; over a year ago, Kelli and I lived in a remote Costa Rican jungle. I would hike up to the orchard through deep jungle bush, macheting my way through some heavy foliage and dealing with bullet ants, army ants and poison dart frogs to reach the sweet oranges and tart lemons I used for cool, refreshing juice drinks.

The dream: enjoying fresh juice in an environment that was close to 100% humidity on some days.


The fears: wildlife and a dangerous incline path I could easily have slipped from and busted my butt.


Blogging is no different. If you have yet to achieve some dream you need to dive more deeply into your fears to see that dream manifest more quickly.


Example; I feared adding a pop up form here because doing so would “annoy my readers”(meme passed back and forth between bloggers who…..fear annoying their readers).  After adding the form – feeling the fear and doing it anyway – I added some 80 subscribers really, really, really quickly. Bringing me even closer to my dreams.


6: Tossing Salt over Your Shoulder Thrice Daily Is a Quick Fix


I can see readers drowning themselves in salt by now.


7: 30 Minutes After Waking Sets the Tone


Spend the 30 minutes after waking doing a few things to set the tone for the day.


How you wake determine how the day proceeds.  This may seem like a secret to you, especially if waking up feels like being let out of the starting gate like a thoroughbred.


This mystery seems far-fetched to struggling, confused bloggers who wake and fire up their smart phone or laptop to dive into the work day. This gets ya living outside-in, which guarantees failure at worst, and muted success at best.


Spend those 30 minutes post waking aligning yourself for the day. Meditate or pray or exercise or, do ’em all.

8: Aligning Your Blog 100% with ONE Core Message Drives Targeted Traffic Really Really Really Easily

Blogging empires grow solely on 1 to 1 connections. Make a ton of good friends by helping them out in as many ways as possible. Those good friends will promote you, support you, spread your word and become rabid brand advocates. This is how to build an empire; one personalized email, one tweet, one Facebook share, one eBook review, one blog comment and one guest post at a time.


11: It’s the Host with the Most


Confused bloggers may follow tips 1-10 to a “t”. And they still fail to make money blogging. Because they do not convey a professional brand. Because they buy a poor hosting package from a less than solid hosting company.


Bloggers who profit pay premium for excellent hosting. Awesome up times, fast loading, professional experience all the way.

I also had weird/limiting beliefs around selling like it was yanking someone’s hard-earned money out of their pockets. Folks want what we have to offer. Premium-wise, and free-wise. Pulling back and not promoting is the greatest disservice imaginable.

    And the point I want to emphasize on is that of being comfortable with selling. I’ve also come across bloggers with such fears and I used to have them before.

    However, my fears melted like a candle wax when I changed my mindset about selling.

    Before, I considered selling to be an activity that’s based on pulling money out of people. But when my mindset became receptive to the idea that selling is all about helping people to get what they really want in a timely and cost effective manner, everything changed.

    And that’s the point I want most new bloggers to understand.

    If you’ve a product that will help people go from point A to point B faster than they will on their own, then it is your incumbent responsibility to let them know about it in every detail.

    Not doing so is actually a disservice to their community and followers.

    And if their followers understands that the product will actually help them avoid the pitfalls and heartache that will prevent them from getting to where they want to go, they’ll be glad and willing to pay for it.

    As you’ve said, bloggers should be comfortable with selling. A little mind trick on themselves might just help to do so.

    I always say that blogging is for everyone, that means it is a simple thing but most of the bloggers get confused when they start blogging.

    Clarity is always the solution, A blogger should know what he want to do and what will he achieve with his efforts. I have seen that many blogger just focus on themselves and stay alone. But blogging is a social work, the mroe social a blogger become the more help he can get from other bloggers.

  15. I had a really tough time with that list building thing and money Anil. I did it half heartedly – list-building – and my numbers aka subscriber based was stagnant. Then I saw some growth through guest posting and adding a pop up but it slowed down in time, and I also saw little revenue through my email list purchases. Eventually I did a full out list building blitz and realized the money is in the relationships I build with subscribers,and I prosper more through my list than ever. Thanks Anil for the comment!

  17. James I totally know what you mean. Sometimes we forget that online, we are dealing with human beings. Said humans usually needing time offline to build friendships. So said humans behave the same online 😉

    Ditto on the dog fight. It fascinated me to learn how a simple trick breaks them up. Think it is a survival thing. I also read how many big dog owners – or owners of multiple dogs – use fire extinguishers to break up melees. Sucks out the dog’s breath, temporarily blinds them and it does not damage save the initial shock, which of course helps break up a potentially fatal situation.

    I particular am keen on the human connection you reference throughout these tips. Sometimes I think the online world can be perceived as far different to the offline world. Just because we generally communicate on a ‘faceless’ level online, the same principals should apply in how we build relationships.

    Often, I see it as having a best friend and thinking back to when you first met that person. You sure might have had chemistry together, but best friends? Straight away? Someone you trust and know inside out? Surely not. That takes time.

    As you say, it’s all about those 1 to 1 connections!

    As you may already know, I’ve been on this branding/messaging ordeal and #1 really is the beginning for setting the stage for profiting. If you’re not clear as to what you’re blog is about, then how do you expect that your visitors will.

    It sounds like it may be common sense, but how many of us weren’t getting the message across (raising my hand). And you know what? I’ve changed my message a few times to be more crystal clear about it and it’s evitable that I’ll change it again to be more clear.

    Great article as always and I can’t really think of anything else. As for narrowing your blog down to one core message you definitely have that down.

    Your content not only says what you offer, but the images that you post on your blog also tell people that you are living in paradise. I love it!

    I agree, if you narrow your blog’s focus and let people know what you do, then they will come. I think it takes a little while for bloggers to figure it out, but as they continue writing content, it eventually comes.

    As for selling to people, it’s a must. You can’t be afraid to sell, otherwise your blog won’t ever make any money. You’re running a business and providing valuable content that will change people’s lives if they take action on it.
