Cheltenham UK
Today I arrived in the Cotswolds.
This posh region of the UK is home to Ellen DeGeneres, David Beckham, Patrick Stewart, Kate Moss and Jeremy Clarkson, among others.
We assumed the quick 30 minute train ride from nearby Bristol would be an easy peasy day.
But everything appeared to go wrong as soon as we left the hotel.
First, we walked to the wrong bus stop. We crossed the street to find the right bus stop. The bus allegedly stopped by the train station; the schedule and even the bus driver confirmed it. But after buying the tickets and passing one stop, Kelli felt that we were on the wrong bus; we were.
We hopped off. Time elapsed. We mistakenly had cut it close. She fired up the phone to try Bolt. After 3 attempts, no drivers picked it up in this region well outside of Bristol town center.
I looked at the station, our legs, then made the executive decision to walk/jog to the train station. I pulled both carry-on’s, 2 backpacks and a bag 30 minutes to the train station.
The Pepsi can did not dispense from the vending machine at the station; I really wanted that cola. So I bought an iced tea instead.
When I boarded the train I had nowhere to place the carry-on’s because the upper compartment seemed too narrow. I found some room in the back. The conductor said it was OK because we were getting off at the first stop.
The train ride proceeded smoothly enough. A little dog snapped at Kelli but that seemed mild for this day.
We got off in Cheltenham. But the ride share app – Bolt – did not work again after multiple attempts. No drivers. We had a 55 minute walk to the house. But Google Maps stopped working on both of our phones. My Maps went blank. My Maps always works. Her Maps always works. Not today, though. I did the trouble shooting thing 3, 4 then 5 times. Maps remained blank.
Kelli eventually got her Maps to work after we trended in the right direction.
55 minutes later we arrived at the house.
Do you know what?
By and large, Kelli and I remained calm and confidently found and acted on solutions to a travel day where everything seemed to go wrong.
I follow the same system to handle all blogging problems.
Like it or not, everything will go wrong with your blog from time to time. I bet you have already experienced this cyber crap storm.
Hosting problems, Google algorithm smack downs, readers who refuse to make payment, social media narratives, corrupted plug-ins, nasty critics and a litany of other issues try to torpedo your blog here and there.
Follow these tips to solve your blogging problems when everything appears to fall apart all at once.
1: Breathe Deeply
Breathe deeply to become present.
Center yourself to avoid the insane inner narration that makes problem-solving impossible.
Today, I knew something was up when the sign at the bus stop literally told us that the bus stopped at the specific train station that the bus driver noted was not on that bus route. Why nobody had changed the physical sign at the bus stop made no sense to me.
That symbolic red flag told me; today was not flowing smoothly on a level of form.
Breathing deeply calmed my mind and helped me to face, feel and forgive any fears triggered as the day collapsed.
Relax your mind. Breathe deeply. Become aware of your inner world to prevent your ego from making the day an impossible, unsolvable, grievance-filled nightmare.
Practical TipsÂ
- meditate regularly
- practice observing your mind throughout he day
- breathe deeply 3-4 times daily for 3-5 minutes per session
2: Allow Fears to Arise
I barely felt any fears; I meditate quite often to keep my mind calm.
Yet a few residual fears arose.
Allow fears about the blogging collapse to arise.
Fears keep you in the wrong. Being wrong-minded makes problem-solving impossible.
Let the feelings surface. Feel the panic. Hug the anxiety. Embrace the anger. Let it all up to clear it all.
Pushing fears deeper into the mind anchors problems. Fears need to go for problems to go away, too.
Stop denying fears. No blogger sees solutions while being blinded by their own fears. Things keep going wrong if your fears run the blogging show. Where your attention and energy goes, grows.
Practical Tips
- practice allowing fears to arise in your mind
- beware attempting to bury fears through distraction or mindless deluding
- develop the skill of being comfortable with feeling uncomfortable
3: Look Past Fears
Do not indulge in fear.
Look past fears to find solutions.
Admittedly, this step seems difficult to follow until you practice mind training. Most bloggers mindlessly indulge their fears. Some complain incessantly. Others victimize themselves obsessively. Some air grievances with alarming regularity.
Blogging obstacles will arise. Either you indulge your fears to remain stuck behind the obstacle or look past fear to allow solutions to surface.
Practical TipsÂ
- train your mind to let go of fears versus indulging in these emotions
- try your best not to complain about your blogging misfortunes excessively; we all face obstacles at times so you are not being victimized but paying your blogging tuition
4: Calmly Find Solutions
Calmly find solutions to obstacles.
