Blogging From Paradise is based on the idea of retiring to a life of island hopping through smart blogging.
I reached that goal before hitting the road in 2011.
A travel blogger whom I met at the India Embassy in Kathmandu Nepal influenced me to create this blog.
She had been rolling in some sweet dough but slammed into Google troubles. Sponsored post and advertising content had dried up.
I considered how many travel bloggers yearned to go full-time but had to hold down jobs to pay bills and fund travels.
Blogging From Paradise was born.
I want to offer you a guide for retiring to a life of blogging through travel.
Living this life is not always easy.
But the rewards far outweigh the challenges.
My Story
I went from laid off security guard to island hopper via a freeing but sometimes painful process.
I still make mistakes to this day; almost no experienced blogger admits this reality for the fear of looking like a fraud.Â
Yet you only need to succeed far more often than you fail to make this dream life a reality.
The secret is to patiently build content that works for you around the clock.
Admittedly, that is a radical shift because you and I learn to trade time for money as employees. But that mindset needs to go when you build an online business while changing time zones.
My wife and I live incredibly humbly.
Being full-time digital nomads, we own little and have found immense peace in living on a budget.
Yet we possess enough financial flexibility to live where we want to for however long we wish.
That’s freedom.
Follow the tips below for retiring to a life of travel through blogging.
1: Build Your Blog Patiently
Pick One Niche
Become a trusted specialist.
Do one thing to do it well.
Master one blogging niche to earn credibility. In the offline world, successful individuals choose one professional venture to learn and master that niche inside-out. Consider lawyers or doctors, for instance. Aspiring professionals go to school, get training and practice one discipline to gain credibility.
For aspiring travelers who blog, this means picking a single niche.
- choose 5-10 personal passions
- gauge demand through Google semantic search, Reddit, Quora, Facebook, X, LinkedIn and Threads
- match one passion with a pressing reader need
Choose a Domain and Hosting
Invest money in your domain and hosting.
Own your online real estate.
Buy your domain to gain credibility. Invest in hosting to secure your personal spot online.
Social media becomes turbulent. Owners of these sites cling to specific narratives. Factor in fickle algorithms and your business platform on Facebook, X and Instagram may as well be quicksand.
Own your blog to:
- set the rules
- customize your brand
- monetize your blog without constraints

- write and sell eBooks
- create and sell online courses
Establish multiple income channels to maximize earnings.
Income streams come and go. Open multiple sources to insulate yourself from inevitable instability.
Align Channels with Your Niche
Pick income channels fully aligned with your niche.
For example, I currently sell an online course for bloggers and eBooks for bloggers chock filled with practical tips.
Bloggers told me to create and sell online courses and eBooks as detailed guides to address pressing blogging problems.
I obliged based on their feedback.
My income channels are always subject to change though as should be the case for any blogger. Times change. Ways for making money change with the times.
Be nimble to prosper.
3: Plan and Pay for Your Travels
Plan Travel Logistics
Plan your trips by thinking through logistics carefully.
Consider:
- personal preferences
- climate
- cultural considerations
- possible language barriers
For example, when my wife and I began circling the globe in 2011 we picked Bali as the jump off point.
The Island of the Gods offered us:
- a warm climate
- friendly locals who spoke English in tourist areas
- a low cost of living
- a mild monsoon season (where rates for everything were slashed significantly)
Do your homework before hitting the road.
Picture what you want in a travel location.
Set up a clear blueprint based on your expectations combined with the realities of travel.
Budget Your Finances
Figure out how much money you intend to spend monthly on travels.
Work within your budget.
Consider:
- transportation costs (plane tickets, train tickets, bus tickets, ride share costs, motorbike rental)
- hotel or apartment rental costs
- food costs
- visa costs (if applicable)
Research how to get around in that specific country or region.
My wife and I flew via Air Asia over 50 times during our Southeast Asia trips. From Thailand, to Bali to Malaysia and all around this region, the low cost operator gets you from Point A to Point B reliably on the cheap. Some short flights cost less than $25 USD. Note; this is not an advertisement nor have I been compensated for the plug. I just want to share what’s worked for us.
Renting a motorbike is the best way to get around much of Southeast Asia. Bus travel rules in Central America. The subway is about the ultimate way to get around New York City. The Tube and train get you cheaply around London proper but bus travel works best for long haul travels as the train gets mad expensive traveling to and from popular tourist spots.
Do thorough due diligence. Find the right solutions for your budget.
Be Flexible as You Circle the Globe
My wife and I began traveling as renters.
But we morphed into house sitters back in 2014.
After doing a 4 month sit in Fiji we were hooked.
Now we pretty much house sit for free all over the globe.
Sweet deal, right?
But wait a second.
Nothing is truly free in the world.
We built up our resume – and reviews – by gaining invaluable experience.
We are fully committed to skillfully caring for:
- homes
- pets
As always with traveling and blogging, the split second snap shot you see on social is backed by plenty of work, ample experience and some stumbling along the way.
House sitting is a phenomenal way to see the world on the cheap for skilled sitters who do an excellent job caring for pets and homes.
Traveling full-time opens your mind to infinite possibilities.
That’s the fun of circling the globe non-stop.
Whether related to lodging, your blogging business or getting around, be flexible.
I never dreamed I’d be comfortable, confident and quite a mean motorbike rider. Yet 3 years collectively in Thailand and Bali made this a necessity.
Be open-minded.
Enjoy blogging around the globe.
You never know where it will take you.
Conclusion
I hope you enjoyed my practical guide for retiring to a life of travel through blogging.
After being a full-time digital nomad since 2011 I feel like the secrets to this lifestyle are to:
- have fun
- not take it seriously (commit to it yet lighten up, laugh and enjoy the unfolding process)
- be flexible
- trust your gut
Work from the basic guide above.
Enjoy blogging.
Love your travels.
I’ll see you on the road.
