Is Blog Commenting Still a Thing?

Do you like money?

If so then blog commenting is still a thing.

Let me explain.

I drop detailed comments on blogs. Fellow bloggers deeply appreciate my thorough blog comments because:

  • social proof establishes credibility
  • bounce rate killing (a good thing!) anchors readers onsite
  • user generated content bolsters your blog through co-creation

The appreciative blogger visits my blog based on the helpful comment. He or she reads a post. He or she drops a detailed comment. Our bond strengthens. Since the blogging buddy:

  • appreciates my helpfulness
  • values my practical blog posts

the individual buys my eBook and/or online course.

I earn money blogging based partially on the detailed blog comment.

Do you understand why blog commenting is a thing?

Does generating indirect income through genuine blog comments seem to be enough for you? I think this is enough for me.

If you enjoy earning money then blog commenting is still a thing. Publishing genuine comments is relevant because every blogger perceives money to be somewhat practical in this world. Comments open the door to earning blogging income based on the case above.

But now it’s time to visit a different scenario to prove the effectiveness of genuine blog comment.

Playing the Blog Commenting Long Game

A decade ago I dropped a few highly detailed comments on about the top blog in the world.

After a few weeks the blogger dropped the highest quality backlink for Blogging From Paradise Dot Com. No one topped it. He is the leader of blogging leaders.

His readers found my blog, online course and eBooks freely based on genuine blog commenting opening the cyber door.

Is that enough for you?

Scoring perhaps the highest quality backlink possible makes genuine blog commenting highly relevant. The valued link manifested a while ago but the principle remains true now. Appreciative bloggers drop quality backlinks to trusted blogs. Publishing detailed blog comments instills appreciation. The idea rang true 10 years ago. The idea remains true today.

Does playing the blog commenting long game make sense to you?

Sometimes I drop authentic comments for months to bond deeply with bloggers. Other times I strengthen relationships in seeming hours. I never know. You never know. Humans move at a different pace. Some do not take a genuine interest in your blog based on personal preferences. Who cares? Most will gravitate to your blog. Friendships blossom. Trusting blogging buddies link to your blog. Some buy your online course. Some buy your online eBook.

Even better?

Some drive heavy referral traffic. Some drive heavy referral income.

12 Times the Normal eBook Sales

I recall playing blog comment ping pong with a trusted blogger years ago. We promoted each other through social media. We dropped heavily-detailed comments on each other’s blogs. She deeply appreciated my genuine comments and social shares. We become friends.

One day, my blogging friend bought my flagship eBook. She loved it so much she reviewed the eBook. Note; the process unfolded organically over months. She purchased my eBook months after we played authentic blog comment volleyball.

The high level blogger chose to do an awesome thing; she published a glowing endorsement of my eBook for her loyal tribe. The pro devoted an entire blog post to a Blogging From Paradise eBook review.

At the end of that week my eBook sales jumped twelve fold.

Is blog commenting still a thing?

Would a human being NOT do what she did back then, today?

Why not?

Are comments closed on every blog? I don’t think so.

Look closely at the above scenario to respect the indirect nature of genuine blog commenting. I published authentic, detailed, mindful, helpful comments for months on her blog. I did not explicitly get anything from each comment, save some blog traffic. However, I did get/earn her trust with each comment. She believed in me. She appreciated me. Each comment meant something special to her. I loved adding user generated content to her blog to help her. I enjoyed lowering her bounce rate. I felt good about adding social proof to her blog.

She gobbled up my eBook. She loved it. She reviewed it. Hundreds of loyal readers trusted her honest review. My eBook sales skyrocketed twelve times the average weekly rate.

Genuine blog commenting is as indirectly profitable now as ever because helping bloggers to build strong relationships is as profitable now as ever. Dropping blog comments consistently is one way to help people to earn their trust.

Make friends. Build bonds. The sky becomes the limit from there in terms of organic traffic and blogging income.

How to Comment

Commenting effectively is commenting genuinely.

Never adopt the “blog comment monkey see monkey do” strategy unless you target the spam folder. Less genuine comments find the trash heap.

Drop authentic blog comments. Add value. Share practical tips. I envision myself dropping 2-3 detailed paragraphs or perhaps a mini guest post if it feels right.

Add value. Become valuable. Get based on what you give. Sear this idea onto your mind. Comment to give. Getting (traffic, income, joint opportunities) occurs organically.

Follow these practical tips:

  • read the blog post
  • drop detailed comments for the best results (go above and beyond to help bloggers)
  • personalize comments
  • comment predominantly on blogs from your niche or related to your blog
  • comment consistently
  • comment to help bloggers

Value genuine blog commenting like no one else does to generate results through authentic blog commenting like no one else does.

I recall driving 250 visitors to Blogging From Paradise Dot Com daily through one whopper of a comment I dropped on a high level blog from my niche. Scouring backlink metrics stunned me. A quarter of a thousand people visited my blog from one detailed comment every day. Yet 300,000 community members is 300,000 community members, ya know? Perhaps a few thousand scrolled down to read my detailed comment. 250 needed to learn more about me and my blog based on my mindful comment.

Conclusion

Never overlook the power of genuine blog commenting.

Capitalize when most bloggers miss the boat.

How can you start?

Look blow.

Write!

Your Turn

Is blog commenting still a thing to you?

Or did you write off blog commenting since many bloggers closed comments?

  1. I don’t know how it was years ago. Perhaps people prefer commenting on social media.

Commenting on blogs does still work. It builds community and friendships.

    but

Many people turned off comments. Many people don’t even reply when you do leave a comment.. people want everything for no work…

    • Years ago, genuine blog commenting was a goldmine. Authentic travel bloggers like yourself would make a killing fairly quickly because legitimate travel blogging sharing and blog commenting tribes boosted organic reach pretty dang quickly.

Alas, we are in a different era. Yet me, yourself, and other real bloggers with practical thoughts to share are slowly reviving blog commenting as a way to build relationships. Our comments are examples influencing other bloggers to publish similar comments. I recall reading a comment on one of your posts how someone found you via a comment you dropped somewhere else.

Commenting rocks but being thorough and patient are the two key factors. You have both of those down cold, Trevor.
