I am the ultimate rule breaker guys.

I ignored SEO for almost a decade and own a tiny email list.

But I have experienced a little bit of success along the way.

However, breaking some blog golden rules tends to create long blogging struggles.

Golden Rules of Blogging

Virtually every successful blogger adheres to one or all six of these golden blogging rules.

Rules serve a critical purpose; blogging rules create order in your mind. By following a rule you know what to do to succeed and more importantly, what to avoid.

Golden rules offer you guidelines. Follow each to capitalize on pro blogger experience. Pros followed these strategies persistently to become successful.

Rules also alert you as to what to avoid. For example, perhaps you fear losing money. Blogging seems like a good way to make money. But after reading golden rule number 1 below – blog your passion – you understand how blogging mainly for passion yields success, not blogging mainly for money.

Honor these golden rules of blogging to accelerate your success.

1: Blog Your Passion

Pick a blog topic you love working to:

  • be patient
  • be persistent
  • detach mostly from stats like profits, traffic, social shares, etc.
  • see work as the reward, and outcomes as bonuses
  • enjoy the ride
  • lap bloggers in your niche who chase money or fame

This is the #1 golden rule of blogging because your passion fuels your blogging journey through ups and downs.

Sit in a quiet room. List 3-5 passions of yours. Whittle down to one topic that makes you feel most alive.

Tie Passion to a Problem

Tie your passion to a problem.

Solve a core problem through your blog.

I enjoy sharing blogging tips. Bloggers struggle to drive traffic. Publishing blog posts engineered to increase your blog traffic feels fun and solves a pressing blogging problem.

Bloggers who enjoy blogging persist for years. Solving a specific problem connects you with readers who require your expertise.

Blog your passion. Solve a problem. Lay a rock solid foundation for your blogging campaign.

2: Learn Blogging From Pros

Top bloggers cut years from your learning curve if you listen to them.

Perhaps you deviate from a few of their rules but by following most of their advice you will succeed online.

Follow top blogs in your niche. Read top blogging tips bloggers too.

Take notes on posts. Study the notes. Put your knowledge into action.

Blogging From Paradise eBooks

Invest in courses and eBooks created by top bloggers. Follow a properly formatted framework for building a successful blog.

As a new blogger you have no idea what you’re doing. Listen to pros. Do what works from Day 1.

Professional bloggers know how to succeed based on their year’s worth of successful blogging experience. Do not wing it when pros can teach you what works and what does not work. Allow these veterans to be your blogging guinea pig. Let them teach you to avoid making common errors to preserve your peace of mind.

Practical Tips

  • build a watch list of two to three professional blogging tips bloggers
  • read their blog posts
  • buy their courses and eBooks
  • Use Google, Facebook and Twitter to find blogging tips mentors

Learn from pros to avoid winging it. Study advice from the best to follow a successful blogging path.

3: Pick One Topic (and Stay on Topic)

Pick one blog topic. Be a specialist.

Avoid temptations to niche hop. Niche hopping confuses readers who expect one topic but see another topic. Imagine if this post was about camel mating rituals? I’d lose a few readers who expected a post helping them become better bloggers. My blog name and tag line promises smart blogging tips. Minus the odd travel post I chat about smart blogging tips.

Specialize to prosper. Do one thing. Do it well.

Practical Tips

  • pick one blogging niche
  • become a trusted specialist
  • avoid urges to add niches for fear of missing out
  • do one thing to do it well

4: Create Long Form Content

Create long form content through:

  • blog posts
  • guest posts
  • live broadcasts
  • podcasts

Solve specific problems in your niche to create helpful content.

Drill down to address reader pain points. Email readers asking what they need help with. Read top blogs in your niche; pros know what readers want.

Write at least one blog post weekly. Publish 1200 word or longer posts.

New bloggers can publish 600-1000 word posts to gain confidence but upping word counts by adding more details to content accelerates your success. Google loves details. People love details.

Practical Tips

  • listen to the needs of your readers
  • publish in-depth, detailed content
  • aim for 1200 words
  • add as many practical tips as possible
  • publish a detailed resource
  • give ample time and energy to publishing a thorough blog post
  • format the post effectively by using short sentences
  • add at least one picture to make posts visually appealing
  • link out to trusted blogs from your niche
  • link in to in-depth posts published to your blog
  • add multi-media like videos to enrich the user experience

Never hold back whenever you create content. Cut the strings of expectation. Generously serve readers to thrive with your content creation campaign.

5: Build Connections with Successful Bloggers

Befriend top bloggers in your niche by doing a few things:

  • comment genuinely on their blog
  • promote them on social media
  • promote them on your blog

Ask for nothing in return. Be a friend. Become a friend.

Some top bloggers in your niche mention you on their blog. Other top bloggers invite you to guest post on their blog.

Collaborating amplifies our collective success.

Practical Tips

  • comment genuinely on blogs related to your niche
  • promote fellow bloggers on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn
  • promote trusted bloggers through your blog posts
  • ask for nothing in return
  • expect nothing in return
  • allow friendships to grow organically

6: Simple Concepts Generously Applied Create Success

Following the prior steps generously – for years – creates online success.

Bullshit hacks do not work. Shortcuts do not exist.

Follow simple steps every day guys. Learn from pros. Create helpful content. Connect with leaders by helping them.

Simple wins.

Beware employing complex blogging strategies. Complex tactics create stress and lead to failure.

Simply creating and connecting generously for a long time by trusting in yourself and the blogging process promotes success.

What About Monetizing?

Monetizing happens seamlessly if you follow these rules for years. Most bloggers struggle to make money because they skip one or all of these steps. Or they follow all steps for a year or two then panic and bail because they haven’t made millions.

See the journey through.

You’ll succeed by following these golden rules of blogging.

Wrapping It Up

Have fun creating and connecting.

Learn from blogging pros.

Free yourself to become a prospering blogger.

    Hi Ryan,
These are powerful tips. I liked your one-2 punch strategy. First find your passion and then tie your passion to a problem.

    Hi Ryan

    Great advice, solid golden rules.

This is why bloggers need to “learn from the pros.”

You’ve obviously been around the block… many times 🙂

So you know what it takes to build a blogging business.

If new bloggers would follow the pros, like you, they would have a clear vision of how to succeed, while they enjoy their blogging business.

    Hey Ryan,

    Great advice, I must say.

For me, the number one rule for blogging success is to be consistent. It doesn’t matter how often you write, but that you’re writing on a regular basis.

If you can keep that up, you’ll start to see results.

With more content, you’ll start to attract more readers from search engines and, eventually, you’ll be able to monetize your blog.

Of course, other rules are important too, like writing quality content and promoting your blog, but if you can be consistent, you’ll start to see results. Most new bloggers give up too soon because they don’t see results right away.

So, my advice is to stick with it and be consistent.

    The results will come!

Blogging is a long-term game and, you can’t expect overnight success.

    Great tips Ryan!

If you blog about what you’re passionate about it won’t feel like work.

The actual reward will be the process and not the traffic, leads, sales and customers.

Agreed 100% Tyronne. Great to see you!
