I wanted to leave a review based on my stay at easyHotel in London (really Luton) England for a few reasons.
I enjoyed my time there and wanted to do the place a solid.
I also wanted to indicate that the hotel is located a good hour from most popular London tourist spots since its location is Luton, a town well north of the city.
No worries; easyHotel is a 2 minute walk from bus and rail lines leading directly into London. Noting the location simply reveals that cheap airfare for Luton flights indicates that you need to pay a little bit – 12 pounds minimum ($14.50 USD) – to get deep into London via bus which is incredibly reasonable. Rail options also avail themselves if you pay more to spend less time on public transport.
I felt an intuitive nudge to review the place because some “blew it out of the water” on various sites. For those not from the NYC metro area I mean that it attracted a score of negative reviews, most of which seemed inaccurate.
This is a budget hotel in the London area. Spending little money in one of the more expensive cities on earth means receiving helpful, simple, basic service.
Let’s break it down.
Location
easyHotel is sandwiched between a large mall and public transportation very close to Luton Airport.
Walk 2 minutes in one direction to the mall for:
- grocery shopping (Tesco, Lidl)
- SIM cards
- restaurants
- pharmacy
Luton airport sits a 10 minutes car ride away. Kelli and I booked a service for 20 pounds to whisk us to the hotel a wee before midnight.
Basically, it sits on the outskirts of the airport but in quieter surroundings. Sounds like a win to me.
Being able to get your SIM card, a quick bite to eat or to even shop if you feel like stocking up on a few bits ands bobs (I had to do it) makes sense. Ditto for having easy access to rail or buses directly into London.
This easyHotel location boasts each option a few steps outside of the front door.
Rooms
Our room was immaculately clean.
Was it small?
Yes.
But again, if prices start at 34 pounds in London simply do a little bit of research on the average cost of a hotel room in this glam city. It ain’t cheap.
One has elbow room to stretch for a few before hopping into bed.
The small bathroom was neat, tidy and airy enough. The shower put out super duper hot water quickly.
I liked the bright lighting as far as the design.
Both bathroom and bedroom lights were brilliant.
Internet speed? Fast.
TV? Check.
Comfortable bed? Yep.
Good pillows? Yes sir.
No Windows
Yep; our room did not have a window.
Why?
Prices started at 39 pounds.
Did it matter to me?
No.
We booked the room to sleep in before traipsing into London the following day.
I understand that this may not be for everyone; hence the honest review.
However, if your intent is to find a clean, simple, inexpensive place to sleep it actually works out.
Newsflash; dark rooms promote sleep.
Staff
Staff were polite, pleasant and quite helpful.
The two folks working the desk were kind in assisting us.
The individual working the morning shift even let us leave our bags behind the desk for free as we wandered around the mall for 2 hours (The hotel usually charges for the service).
One kindly maid accidentally knocked and opened the door a few minutes before check out. She apologetically – if not sheepishly – pulled back the moment she detected our presence. I had zero issues with that, of course.
Another maid smiled like the Cheshire Cat and beamed “Good morning” as we made our way to the reception area on checking out.
Cleanliness
This easyHotel location is perhaps the cleanest hotel I’ve visited.
From its overall presentation, to the linens, bathroom and hallways, I saw nothing but newness. By that, I mean the place was so clean it looked brand spanding new.
No specks on sheets. No dots on walls. Everything appeared to be in pristine condition.
Neighborhood
The neighborhood in Luton surrounding the hotel is fine.
Despite negative publicity recently I found the general area to be safe, secure and even a tad charming.
Perhaps the town itself flashes a gritty nature if not a bit hardscrabble but everyone I spoke to from the mall, to the bus station to the Starbucks were polite, engaging and helpful in guiding us toward London. Chatting with a lady at the bus stop, a small family and a few other locals made for a pleasant experience.
Overall Experience
The easyHotel in Luton is not The Carlyle in NYC.
It is a budget, basic hotel to fit your clear basic requirements in convenient fashion.
I give it 5 stars based on my clear expectations.
That’s the key.
Most expect far more than their payment combined with requirements.
Almost always, this is how the negative reviews build. Cheap travelers demand a premium experience. But you get what you pay for.
I wanted a simple, clean, quiet place to get some sleep before grabbing a SIM card and heaving in to London.
I got it.
The easyHotel in Luton gives you a clean, convenient, flat out cheap place for:
- sleeping
- gaining easy access to London
- getting travel-related stuff done at a mall within a few steps from the hotel
The small, dark hotel room (once you shut the lights off) perfectly prepares you for sleep after a long day of travel. Being a few minutes from the airport doesn’t hurt either as far as convenience.
Budget travelers who want a convenient place for getting some sleep and fulfilling travel requirements (SIM card, food, easy public transport into London) should consider easyHotel in Luton.
