6 Ways to Get Backlinks through Blog Comments

I can hold a conversation with a closed door.

Anyone who’s followed my blogging career knows how genuine blog commenting has been my online bread and butter.

Guest blogging, social media networking and publishing detailed posts to Blogging From Paradise laid my blogging foundation.

However, sharing my thoughts for free through blog comments opened doors for me I could never have imagined.

I:

primarily due to my genuine comments which snared the attention span of professors, world famous bloggers and contributors from iconic brands.

The question remains: how do you actually get backlinks from blog commenting?

Most bloggers do it all wrong. You probably have seen drive-by comments like:

  • “Great post!”
  • “Good job!”
  • “Thanks!”

litter your spam folder.

One line comments never lead to backlinks because you need to publish valuable comments to build blogging relationships. Pointless, spam comments offer no value save being donations to spam and trash folders the blogging world over.

Follow these tips to gain valuable backlinks through blog commenting.

1: Comment Mainly to Share Value Not to Get Backlinks

Comment primarily to share valuable thoughts not to get blog backlinks.

Allow this idea to sear itself onto your mind. Or do not even bother with commenting because you won’t gain any links at all with a rushed, backlink-hungry blogging strategy.

Most bloggers make a mistake by skipping this step.

Commenting mainly to get backlinks causes you to ignore adding value, being genuine, personalizing comments, making a positive impact and building strong relationships. Basically, skipping these steps guarantees that all of your comments go to spam or trash folders to be deleted and unseen forever.

The average blogger approaches blog commenting to:

  • get backlinks
  • hurriedly publish 50-100 one-line, inauthentic comments daily
  • use other blogger’s real estate as a quick way to gain exposure and build business

Of course, these average bloggers either remain average in rare cases or fail horribly almost every time because you get backlinks by giving valuable, thoughtful blog comments.

Publish valuable comments. Frame each comment as a meaningful piece of blog content.

Help fellow bloggers by adding valuable content to their blog posts. Build their brand. Position their posts to rank higher on Google.

Embody this frame of mind to begin your backlink-building campaign from the proper headspace.

2: Comment Genuinely on Blogs from Your Niche

Publish genuine comments on blogs from your niche to increase:

  • direct No Follow links
  • indirect Do Follow links

Bloggers from your niche – and their readers – have similar interests because you discuss the same niche. Write authentic comments to gain links through through the comments and indirectly through:

  • interview requests
  • guest blogging invites
  • brief mentions

Stick to your niche for optimal results.

Find blogs to comment on from your niche then get busy with publishing comments effectively.

Comment for prying eyes to boost backlinks.

3: Publish Detailed Comments

Add details to comments.

Stand out.

Drive backlinks by sharing practical tips through comments.

For example, write at least 1-2 paragraphs to discuss one point made in the blog post. Expand on the point in detailed fashion.

Add meat to the comment. Bloggers appreciate genuine, helpful comments fostering meaningful discussion. Appreciative bloggers bond with generous commentors; Do Follow links often originate through thoughtful comments.

Not every comment needs to be a 5 paragraph masterpiece but at least publish 1-2 paragraphs expressing your opinion related to the post to make blogging friends and to impact readers favorably.

As a practical tip, devote at least 3-5 minutes to read and understand the post. Write an intelligible comment based on your understanding.

Relax. Slow down. Publish a meaningful comment. Add value to the blog post. Lay the foundation for strong relationships.

Gain backlinks by becoming a connected blogger through genuine, detailed blog commenting.

4: Ask Questions and Be Quick to Reply

Asking questions via comments and replying quickly is an underrated backlink-building strategy.

Consider this approach as a bond-building accelerant leading to increased blog Do Follow and No Follow backlinks.

Appreciative blogging buddies organically place Do Follow links pointing to your blog because asking questions on their blog and replying to answers quickly proves that you deeply care about building genuine relationships. Imagine a friend calling you back after chatting earlier in the day to continue the conversation. Doesn’t it feel good when a friend keeps the chat going? Don’t you connect deeply with someone who cares enough to stop by your blog to see your answer to their question?

As a rule of thumb, reply within 12-24 hours to make a strong impact. Or simply get notifications and reply within 5 minutes during waking hours to really hit the mark.

5: Be a Prolific Commentor

Be a prolific commentor to build blogging backlinks.

Comment:

  • on the same blogs persistently
  • on new blogs daily

to expand your reach far and wide.

Every comment published on blogs serves as a No Follow backlink. Each bond you establish with bloggers positions you to receive Do Follow links organically.

Remember why you comment on blogs. Find the extra gear to comment when you feel tired from your blog commenting campaign.

Be patient. Persist. Build backlinks through a dogged blog commenting strategy.

6: Sign Off with Your Name and Address Fellow Bloggers by Name

Sign off comments with your name.

Address bloggers by name.

People love being addressed by name; this makes them feel special. Signing off with your name adds a personal, warm touch.

Paying close attention to these little details makes you and your blog memorable. Memorable bloggers build friendships which spawn a heavy volume of organic blog backlinks.

Conclusion

Blog commenting is still vastly underused as a powerful way to establish relationships and to build backlinks.

While most bloggers trip over themselves by trying to take foolish backlink building “shortcuts” the authentic bloggers who publish genuine comments build impressive backlinks profiles.

Mindfully publish detailed comments on blogs from your niche.

Build Do Follow backlinks indirectly and No Follow links seamlessly by being a genuine blogger who comments with value in mind.

    Hi Ryan,

I have a question: how many of your backlinks are blog comments? You can just give a percentage. 🙂

In all honesty, when I read about you scoring backlinks from Neil Patel and Entrepreneur dot com I was pleasantly surprised; you’ve truly mastered the art. I’m impressed and motivated.

    Thanks for the great how-to!

    Shenna

I would say Shenna….a lot 🙂 Not sure of the percentage. Happy to help you!

I never used commenting on blogs only to get backlinks. I comment on those blogs whose ideas I can relate to. If i have nothing valuable to add then I don’t leave a comment. I do want to connect to bloggers from different niche because I love reading everything. Am I limiting myself by not leaving a comment on every blog?

    Hello Ryan!

Backlinks are by far the best way your blog can get that much required traffic. Through direct traffic from backlinks and obviously with improved Google rankings.

I recently received two do follow backlinks from fellow bloggers with whom I was in constant touch on Twitter.

I didn’t get just a backlink but a little excerpt from one of my blog posts also got featured.

You have completely changed the way I thought about blog commenting and networking on social. It seems they are the only best friends of a beginner blogger like me.

I have been trying for 5 months to interview Neil Patel. Just a Google forms kind of interview. I started interacting with him by commenting on his YouTube videos. He asked me to keep him updated regarding my blogging journey. So I did that. I shared with him every milestone and he always replied to me. Love his modesty.

For 5 months I did that and recently I asked him for an interview through a comment on his LinkedIn post.

He agreed to it and said he’d be waiting for an email. I had a Google form ready that I sent it out to him.

He didn’t reply to my email but I will make sure to send a follow-up email.

The whole point is that commenting and networking, appreciating other people in your niche is the wisest thing you can do as a beginner blogger that has no DA or no authority at all.

I love following your new posts, Ryan. Looking forward to the next one.

    Ali from Infoverses.
