Travel Recap January to February 2023

Kalkan, Turkey

Kalkan, Turkey

I felt an intuitive nudge to recap my travels since I’m globe-trotting again.

First off, you, my readers, want me to blog about my travels here and there. You told me so. Toss in the fact that my new traveling buddies express a keen interest where in the world Ryan is and I decided to publish travel recaps from time to time.

Currently, I am located on the Turkish Riviera in Kalkan, Turkey. Uber Robin Leach-ey, eh?

House sitting for dogs – or their homeowners – in a posh pad consumes this month.

Kalkan sits on the Mediterranean within the southwestern region of the country. Tourists descend in hoards upon this small village during summer months and forget its existence during current winter months. I like that. Kelli likes it too.

Enough local activity keeps a far number of stores open during winter. Temperatures range from around freezing on some mornings to mid-60’s at daily peaks.

Rain has been non-existent except for a big storm manifesting on the day we arrived here.

Blogging From Paradise Travels Abroad Again

Minus a 5 month trip to Panama in 2021 we had not traveled internationally since 2019.

House sits up and down the East Coast of the States made up our domestic travels for most of 2019 to 2023.

In late 2022, we decided to say good-bye to the US for a bit to enjoy international travels once again.

We flew from New Jersey, USA to Athens, Greece in mid-January 2023.

Athens, Greece

Athens was a fascinating city. Hallowed antiquity meets modern convenience in this Greek marvel.

In one neighborhood, time traveling takes you back thousands of years. In the next neighborhood, you can shop at an H&M (Thanks, America).

We only booked Athens to rest quickly before flying to our intended destination: a house sit in Choumeriakos, Crete.

After spending 2 days in Athens we traipsed over to the island of Crete for a 2 week house sit.

Agios Nikolaos, Crete

Agios Nikolaos, Crete

The 2 weeks amid olive groves on this legendary island consisted of long walks with the dog, Cretan hospitality and plenty of blogging work.

Seeing snow-capped peaks during one morning hike stunned me.

Nikithianos, Crete

Nikithianos, Crete

Turns out, Crete is a budding ski destination as the highest elevations experience snow through spring-time.

Crete being complete, Kelli and I flew from Heraklion to Istanbul before migrating to the southwest of Turkey.

Traveling to Istanbul brought us to one of our favorite cities.

I had to enjoy my customary glass of Turkish tea.

Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul, Turkey

People think that Turkey is East Meets West. But almost the entire country sits within Asia. An iota of West attaches to the East, in reality.

After a quick day or so in Istanbul it was time to reach our destination. A 4:30 AM wake-up call to avoid severe weather later in the day jarred the mind but goaded us to the airport for an early morning flight.

We then flew to the Turquoise Coast to enjoy the sights and sounds of Kalkan.

Dog walks, steep hikes around town and feasting on delightful Turkish fare are the orders of the day here.

Keep an eye out for the next travel update on Blogging From Paradise.

Until then….happy travels!

House sitting is becoming more popular as a travel option, I have heard about it from a few experienced travellers. You have stayed in some gorgeous locations so far. Athens is definitely a city I’d like to revisit, too and learn more about. I looked up Kalkan where it is in Turkey and look forward to hearing more from you from that corner of the world.

House sitting seems to be gaining steam in part because Trusted Housesitters – the top site in the world for the niche – put a huge blitz on marketing and expanding. Great to see you here Carolin.

I’m glad you finally got to return to international travel. And you picked a great pair of destinations to begin it. I’ve not been to either but am anxious to go. I knew Turkey straddled two continents but not that it was primarily in Asia. I learned something today. Thanks, Ryan.

Turkey is so much fun Donna. I feel like you’ll love it! The food, people and natural beauty are fabulous. Ditto for Crete, and Greece.

    Livin the life, dude.

    I love winter because:

    1. summer in Vegas is brutal
    2. yeah that’s mostly it

Every time I go for a drive at this time of year and spot snow-covered Mt. Charleston to the west, it takes my breath away. Smile from ear to ear every single time. Perhaps also because it is a shock to the eyes and brain, since those mountains are dry and brown the rest of the year.

Anyway, thanks for the updates. Any food pics coming next time? I am a SUCKER for food pics from around the world.

Glad you’re enjoying travelling again! Greece is wonderful, isn’t it? Istanbul is still on my wishlist, but hoping to get there this year…

I had to Google “Is H&M American” because I always thought it was British (being British myself) it’s actually Swedish – who knew? My life would be much better here in Far North Queensland (near Port Douglas) if we had an H&M nearby, or a Next, or a Marks and Spencer. Shopping for clothes is a nightmare here, and shoes. This was one of the highlights of our trip to London in Feb / March – shopping!

Interesting. I had no idea myself. Shoes became a bit of a challenge here in Turkey because I feel like the Jolly Green Giant with my foot sized compared to most Turks.
